What is EMDR and How Does It Work?

As an integrative clinical hypnotherapist based in Cheshire, one of the questions I am frequently asked by clients looking for deep nervous system regulation is whether different therapeutic modalities can be mixed. Specifically: Can you combine EMDR with Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy?

The answer is yes, absolutely - and they work beautifully together.

As an integrative practitioner, I blend psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and EMDR to create a powerful, dual-action approach. This combination allows us to honour your past, clear traumatic roadblocks, and actively build your preferred future.

Why EMDR and Hypnotherapy Work Better Together

If you explore the FAQs on my website, you’ll know that Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a modern, forward-facing approach. It focuses on your strengths, your existing resources, and what you want to achieve. By reducing general anxiety and using relaxing trance work, SFH helps your intellectual brain regain control over an overwhelmed, anxious primitive survival system.

However, if your primitive brain is constantly being hijacked by a highly specific, deeply rooted traumatic memory, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is the perfect tool to unstick it.

When integrated:

  • EMDR acts as a targeted tool to process and disarm the specific emotional blocks or past traumas keeping your nervous system in a "high alert" threat loop.
  • Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy then steps in to reduce overall anxiety, rebuild your confidence, and wire in new, positive neural pathways for the future.

Breaking Down EMDR: The Core Mechanism

EMDR is a structured psychotherapy designed to help people heal from the emotional distress and symptoms linked to traumatic life experiences.

Crucially - much like my solution-focused approach - EMDR does not require you to talk through or relive every single detail of the trauma out loud. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation (such as side-to-side eye movements, alternating sounds, or tactile tapping) while you briefly hold the memory in mind.

Here is how it helps the brain adaptively heal:

  • Re-engaging the Brain: Traumatic memories can get "stuck" in the brain's primitive survival architecture. Because they are stored differently from ordinary memories, they remain easily triggered, making past threats feel like they are happening in the present moment.
  • Bilateral Stimulation: Following a therapist's moving finger or listening to alternating tones taxes your working memory. This side-to-side attention allows your brain to access the stuck memory while keeping you safely grounded in the present.
  • Reprocessing: This process safely lowers the emotional charge of the memory. It naturally shifts your perspective away from fear and distress toward a feeling of self-empowerment and adaptive resolution.

An EMDR course follows a safe, eight-phase approach. We move gently from history-taking and preparation to targeted memory desensitisation and ongoing evaluation.

What Can This Combined Toolkit Help With?

EMDR is widely recognised by major health organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), as a premier treatment for trauma. By combining it with clinical hypnotherapy, I provide a comprehensive framework for:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD
  • Trauma from accidents, abuse, medical trauma, or sudden life events
  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • Depression and low mood
  • Phobias and specific fears
  • Other conditions like OCD, disordered eating, and chronic pain

Take the Next Step Toward Regulation

You do not have to spend your life reacting to old survival habits or feeling overwhelmed by the past. An integrative, trauma-informed approach means your therapy plan is completely tailored to what your mind and body need right now.

Whether you would prefer to meet online (UK-wide) or in-person at my quiet practice space inside the Juniper Clinic in Stockton Heath, Warrington, I am here to help.
